Increase the volume of natural light entering your home is one of the most prominent home improvement ideas in 2018. There are many ways in which you can do this, some of which are listed below.

Adding Windows

Obviously, adding windows to your home is one of the easiest ways to get more natural light in it. Depending on the design of your property, this might be easy to do in its current guise, or you may need to think about changing the exterior of your home. Having an extension built, or a conservatory could be another easy way to add light but again, think about the cost implications and feasibility. There is no denying it though, more windows in your property equates to more opportunities to get light in to your home.

Skylights

The addition of sky lights in your property can also be a good way to increase the natural light in a specific area of your home, Again, feasibility might not be available, but if you have a kitchen off the rear of the property, with no upstairs part, you could have a skylight in the roof to capture the light flooding down on the area.

Changing your front door

Lots of people have solid front doors, or front doors with very small glazed areas. If you were to change this to a front door that has a large glazed panel, you will immediately notice a difference. We know that lots of people do not want to do this for fear of privacy issues, however etched or reeded glass can allow you to maintain your privacy whilst benefitting from natural light.

Replace solid internal doors with glazed options

In the same way the front door can be changed to bring light in, making the light flow between your home is also important. If you can change any internal doors to ones that have glazed variations, the light will flow around the property much better, and corners that you might have considered to be darker might suddenly appear more attractive. It will also make the room look bigger and more appealing.

Taking down walls

A radical thing you can do is widen doorways or remove internal walls that stop the light passing through. A common place where people do this is between a living room/dining room and the kitchen, creating an open plan space. Inevitably without a large wall in the way, light movement will be easier.

As you can see, there are many ways you can increase the light in your home, with others including adding sliding doors or patio doors to your property. Some are much easier to achieve than others, whilst an investment in another project might help you to increase the light in your home. Whatever you decide to do or how to do it, you should always consult planners if required and make sure you look at all the possibilities before it. You wouldn’t want to change something and then find out it needs to be put back in years gone by because it wasn’t allowed or done properly.
